April 2 and 3, 2011 at the West Vancouver Community Centre
More than 150 people attended workshops facilitated by Stanley King’s Co-design team to explore the use, character and connections that would be desirable in the redevelopment of the 1300 Block of Marine Drive. The workshops began with “A Day in the Life of the 1300 Block”; participants brainstormed the uses, experience, sights, sounds, smells and feel of an ideal day (and night) on the redeveloped site.
Groups formed around various interests (shopping, housing, recreation etc). During the discussions, the artists asked each participant to imagine that the site was designed and built entirely to their satisfaction, “What would you be doing?” When the citizens described their activities, the artists drew them into the picture one by one. Individual activities thus merged into a collaborative drawing. These images are very useful for our architects as they begin to create design concepts.
